Sharing the Stage with Legends

One of the coolest things that happens as you climb the ladder of professional speaking success is sharing the stage with people you’ve listened to on recordings for years. In high school I used to listen to speakers like Zig Ziglar, Don Hutson, Jim Cathcart, Tony Alessandra, Brian Tracy, Bob Proctor, Les Brown, Larry Wilson–and today I’ve shared the stage with all of them and many more. The kick (at least for me) has nothing to do with money, it’s what speaker Steve Anderson calls “psychic income”. The bottom line is that it’s really cool! :)    Watch this short video and make a list of the top 25 speakers you want to share the stage with someday. Motivational Speakers Needed

If you’ve ever considered becoming a motivational speaker or at least adding a motivational component to your topic, NOW is the time! For two years the recession has been sucking the life out of people, and they’re ready to look forward to the future again. While the motivational market is a little rough right now, this is the time for new speakers to emerge and stake their claim. A lot of speakers have given up and gone back to their old jobs. Speaker’s Television Strategy

One of the most effective marketing tools public speakers use to build their brand and take their message to the masses is doing television interviews. Entire speaking empires have been built through the medium of television. Speaker’s like Tony Robbins, Wayne Dyer, Deepak Chopra and others have become famous from being on TV. As some of you know I’m in the middle of a 50-city TV interview tour for my new book, How Rich People Think, which kicked off in Orlando, Florida in July and ends in Sydney, Australia in early December. I’ve appeared on 22 TV talk shows since mid-July, and one of the most important aspects of doing this many shows is to have a strategy, especially around your central theme. In other words, you want to select your central theme in each interview that you want the audience to focus on. The same is true when you’re doing print interviews, radio, or any other form of media. The Washington Post called me yesterday for a comment on one of their leading stories, and again, my goal was to drive one central theme. They quoted me in today’s paper, included only 3 sentences from a 20-minute interview, but it was exactly what I wanted them to focus on. I did another interview with Forbes Magazine earlier this week with the same result. This strategy will help you maximize your publicity efforts. When Public Speakers Should Write a Book

Most speakers I know write their books too early, long before they’ve honed their message and established their uniqueness. That’s why the average speaker sells less than 250 copies of their book, and rarely write more than one. Most speakers books are Think and Grow Rich regurgitated. Invest the time in creating your unique point of view and put it in your book. Take a stand and write in strong, direct language. Writing about positive thinking is great, but it’s been done over and over for the last 100 years. What the market needs is new ideas, especially in a climate of fear and scarcity. People are looking for new strategies to thrive and survive in the new world we are now living in. Once you’ve written a book with a strong platform you can promote it on TV, radio, the Internet and all forms of print media. If the premise of your book is strong and somewhat controversial, it will be newsworthy and the media will want to interview you. My new book, How Rich People Think, is getting some attention in the press for this reason. Some in the media are offended by what I’ve written about the rich and how they think differently than the rest of us, but they still want to interview me! Interesting, huh? You can do the same thing. Here’s a short interview that aired around the country today on Daytime NBC.

Speaking on National Television

Speaking in Stadiums

One of the greatest thrills you can have as a professional speaker is addressing a sold-out stadium packed with 10,000 people. In 40-minutes you can reach more people with your message than most speakers reach in years. I’ve been lucky enough to give lots of stadium speeches, and I’ve learned some important lessons along the way. Speaking in a stadium is different than speaking to 100, 500, or even 1,0oo people. There are many more variables to consider and far more things that can go wrong. In this short video, I’ll give you three of the most important differences you want to be prepared for.

What is Your Public Speaking Dream?

What Tier Level Speaker Are You?

Fortune 500 executives are famous for referring to vendors in what they call ‘Tier Levels’. They take pride in only hiring “Tier 1 speakers”, which is another way of saying “the best of the best”. After all, they can afford it. When you’re spending five million dollars on a national convention, what difference does it make if the keynote speaker costs fifteen or twenty thousand dollars? They want the best and that’s who they hire. While most struggling speakers are worrying about building flashy websites and killer demo videos, Tier 1 speakers are almost always hired by referral. Of all the Fortune 500 executives I’ve spoken for over the last 14 years, I don’t think any of them have seen my demo video or website. Tier 1 speakers focus their efforts on getting better on the platform and improving their product, which is themselves. For those of you enrolled in the 10-day Free Speaking Course (www.freespeakingcourse.com) I want you to pay close attention to this video and take notes on the details of the four tier levels. I doubt that you’re going to hear this anywhere else. I’ve learned that the speaking business is a lot like the weight loss industry: there’s more money in telling people it’s easy than there is in telling the truth. Toastmasters International is the largest public speaking organization in the world with over 250,000 members. I love Toastmasters and have been an active member since 1996. I co-founded the Bill Gove Toastmasters Club in Florida, and I’ve keynoted their regional and international events for free to show my support. The problem is there’s a myth being perpetuated on the internet that Toastmasters is a training ground for professional speaking.
